Mandaue seniors to benefit from digital literacy initiative

Kristin De Dios - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Mandaue City government and a telecommunication company are set to roll out a digital literacy program aimed at helping senior citizens protect themselves from online scams and fraud.

‎During a courtesy visit to Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano on Friday, July 10, the telecom officials presented the proposed Senior Digizen Program, which seeks to train older adults on the safe and responsible use of smartphones, online services, and digital applications.

‎According to Globe representatives, senior citizens remain among the groups most vulnerable to online scams and digital fraud, making digital literacy an important tool in preventing cyber-related crimes.

‎Under the program, participants will be taught how to use digital platforms safely, recognize online threats, and avoid common internet scams.

‎Ouano expressed support for the initiative and said he hopes the program will be implemented in coordination with the city's Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) so more elderly residents in Mandaue can benefit from the training.

Aside from the proposed digital literacy program, Globe officials also discussed expanding the company's partnership with the city government, including efforts to strengthen communication services, improve digital literacy initiatives, and speed up network restoration for customers in Mandaue.
