Sanchez puwede na sa 2024 Paris Olympics

MANILA, Philippines — Aprubado na ang paglangoy ni Fil-Canadian swimmer Kyla Sanchez suot ang Team Philippines jersey sa 2024 Paris Olympics.

Ito ang masayang ibinalita ni Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino matapos aprubahan ng International Olympic Committee (POC) ang kahilingan nito.

“This is good news for Philippine swimming as Kayla and we won’t have to wait two more years for her to be able to represent our country in the Olympics,” ani Tolentino.

Bumisita si Tolentino sa Canadian Olympic Team headquarters sa Toronto.

Matatandaang sumulat si Tolentino sa IOC noong Nobyembre 8 upang hilingin na hindi na sumailalim pa sa three-year residency si Sanchez.

Purong Pinoy si Sanchez dahil ang ama nito ay mula sa Mabalacat, Pampanga, habang ang ina nito ay mula sa Baguio City. Subalit may Canadian citizenship ito at naging bahagi ng Canadian team na nakapilak sa women’s 4x100 meters women’s relay team sa Tokyo Olympics.

Nagdesisyon si Sanchez na magpalit ng nationality noong 2022 at naging bahagi ng Team Philippines sa Hangzhou Asian Games noong Setyembre.

“The IOC Executive Board decided to consent to your request for exemption from the three-year waiting period and thus confirm the eligibility [from a nationality perspective] of Ms. Kayla Sanchez to represent the Philippines at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, subject to qualification,” ayon sa sulat ng IOC.

Ipinadala na ang sulat ng IOC sa World Aquatics at Canadian Olympic Committee.

Wala pang tiket si Sanchez sa Paris Olympics subalit maaaring itong gawaran ng universality slot sa oras na hindi ito magkwalipika sa Olympic qualifiers.

Sa swimming, binibigyan ng dalawang slots — isang babae at isang lalake — ang bawat bansa para makalahok sa Olympics.
