SBP nagsumite ng letter of intent para sa hosting ng Olympic Qualifier

MANILA, Philippines – Gumawa na ng kanilang unang hakbang ang Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas para maging host candidate ng isa sa tatlong 2016 Olympic world qualifying tournaments.

Ito ay matapos magsumite ang SBP ng letter of intent sa FIBA general headquarters sa Geneva noong Biyernes.

Makakalaban ng Pilipinas, natalo sa China sa bidding war para sa 2019 World Cup, para sa hosting ng isa sa tatlong Olympic qualifiers ang Mexico, Ca­nada, Italy, Turkey, Russia, Germany at Serbia.

“The deadline was Monday. But we’re not too sure with the weather, so we submitted our ‘expression of interest’ as early as Friday night,” sabi ni SBP deputy executive director Butch Antonio.

“In return, the FIBA sent us two sets of documents that we have to fill up and satisfy to formalize our bid on or before Nov. 11,” dagdag pa nito.

Nakasaad sa unang dokumento ang operating budget, contract agreement at principal terms bukod pa sa venue, working rooms, transportation, hotel accommodation, logistics at iba pa.

Ihahayag ng International Basketball Association (FIBA) ang tatlong winning bidders sa FIBA board meeting sa Geneva sa Nov. 23.

Hangad ng Turkey, Russia at Germany na ma­ging host para sa tsansang  makapaglaro sa 2016 Olympics sa Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nabigo silang maka­kuha ng puwesto sa naka­raang FIBA EuroBasket eliminator.

Ang mga maglalaro sa wildcard competition ay ang France, Serbia, Greece, Italy at Czech Republic (Europe), Canada, Mexico at Puerto Rico (Americas), Angola, Tunisia at Se­negal (Africa), New Zealand (Ocea­nia) at ang Pilipinas, Iran at Japan (Asia).

Ang tatlong qualifiers ay magkakasabay na idaraos sa Hulyo 5-11, 2016 kung saan ang top teams mula sa tatlong torneo ang maglalaro sa Rio Olympics.
