ABAP walang kikilingan sa pagpili ng atletang isasabak sa mga int'l tourney

MANILA, Philippines - Walang kikilingan ang Amateur Boxing Associa­tion of the Philippines (ABAP) kaugnay sa pagpili ng mga atletang ilalaban sa mga international competitions.

“Suggestions are always welcome although we’ve been doing that all along,” wika ni ABAP secretary-general Patrick Gregorio.

Kamakalawa ay sinabi ni Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia na maaaring hindi nakukuha ng ABAP ang mga boksingerong may tsansa sa medalya dahil sa “bata-bata system” para sa pagkuha ng mga atleta para sa national team.

“There should be tryouts and qualifying tournaments among all boxing clubs in the country so we can choose the best,” wika ni Garcia.

Idiniin ni Gregorio na walang nangyayaring ‘favo­ritism’ sa ABAP, nasa ilalim ni Ricky Vargas simula noong 2008, at kasalukuyan silang nakikipagtulu­ngan sa mga regional clubs kagaya ng ALA Boxing Club nina Tony at Michael Aldeguer sa Cebu City.

“We assure the (PSC) chairman his ideas are alig­ned with us. His worries are our worries, too. We thank him for his concern. ABAP is pro-active,” wika ni Gregorio.

Idinagdag pa ng bo­xing official na maraming national team members ang kanilang nadiskubre sa iba’t ibang probinsya.

Ilan dito ay sina World Junior champion Eumir Marcial mula sa Zamboan­ga, World Women’s champion Josie Gabuco buhat sa Palawan at Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga ga­ling sa Davao.

Sinabi pa ni Gregorio na regular na nagsasagawa ng tryouts ang ABAP at ang bilang ng medalya na kanilang nakuha sa SEA Games, Asian Games at World Championships ay patunay ng kanilang magandang grassroots program.

Nakatakdang magdaos ng eleksyon ang ABAP sa Oktubre 20 sa Bago City.
