Barriga lalaban para sa ginto

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan – Inungusan ni light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga si Shahobidin Zoirov ng Uzbekistan, 13-10, para makapasok sa gold medal round ng Sydney Jackson Memorial Boxing Tournament dito sa Universal Uzbekistan Sports Complex.

 Ang mga counterpunches ang siyang naging sandata ng 17-anyos na si Barriga para talunin si Zoirov, kumampanya sa nakaraang World Series of Boxing para sa tropa ng Russia, sa kanilang laban sa semifinals.

Kinuha ni Barriga, ang tanging London Olympics qualifier, ang first round, 4-2, bago kontrolin si Zoirov sa second at third round. 

Makakatapat ng tubong Panabo, Davao del Norte sa finals si Russian pride David Ayrapetyan, lalaban din sa 2012 London Olympics.

“He’s highly motivated and is focused in training. Although he has a tough opponent, he’s really pumped up,” ani ABAP executive director Ed Picson kay Barriga.

Yumukod naman si flyweight Ian Clark Bautista kay Shexriyor Isakov ng Uzbekistan, 4-8.

Tanging bronze medal ang makukuha ng 17-anyos na pambato ng Negros Occidental na si Bautista.

Nagtabla sina Bautista at Isakov sa first round, 2-2, bago nakadistansya ang Uzbek sa second round, 5-3, patungo sa tagumpay nito.
