POC chief umiwas sa tunay na isyu sa 2011 SEAG

MANILA, Philippines - Nagtago kahapon sa li­kod ng mga atleta ang Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) ukol sa palpak nitong gold medal projection sa nakaraang 26th Southeast Asian Games sa Indonesia.

Sa halip na sagutin ang ka­tanungan kung bakit 36 gintong medalya lamang ang nakolekta ng Team Philippines sa 2011 SEA Games ay itinuon ni Co­juangco ang kanyang aten­syon sa mga national ath­letes.

“We have nothing but praise and I think we should all be proud of our athletes who participated in the last Southeast Asian Games,” ani Cojuangco. “Makikita mo lahat in winning or lo­sing, either they win or not talagang mga gentlemen. Talagang sport sila.”

Bukod sa 36 golds, humakot rin ang mga atleta ng 56 silver at 77 bronze me­dals para tumapos bilang sixth placer sa naturang bien­nial event.

Bago ang 2011 SEA Ga­mes, matapang na ini­ha­yag nina Cojuangco at Phi­lippine Sports Commis­sion (PSC) chairman Ri­chie Garcia na kokolekta ang mga atleta ng 70 gintong medalya at maaaring lu­maban sa Top Three sa over­all standings.   

Kabuuang 182 gold, 151 silver at 142 bronze me­dals ang inangkin ng host Indonesia kasunod ang Thailand (107-100-120), Vietnam (96-90-100), Ma­laysia (59-50-81) at Si­nga­pore (42-45-73).

“If you look at it, we sent about 520 athletes at ang to­tal medal natin is 169. If you add them altogether ‘yung mga atleta nating ipi­nadala, I’ll safely say more then 50 percent of our athletes that went there won some kind of medal,” pa­lusot ni Cojuangco. “Kaya ‘yung mga usapan na debacle, I don’t think its un­called for eh.”

Ikinadismaya naman ni Sen. Pia Cayetano ang palpak na gold medal projection ng POC at PSC bago ang 2011 SEA Games.

“Kung dati nakaka-pu­westo tayo ng first, se­cond or ‘di man third, I can’t understand kung bakit nga­yon, 6th place na lang ta­yo,” gigil na pahayag ni Ca­yetano, sumasali sa ilang local at international triathlon.
