Pakikipagkasundo sa POC, unang hakbang ni Garcia

MANILA, Philippines –  Hulyo 19, 2010 nang kum­pirmahin ni Ricardo “Richie” Garcia ang kanyang appointment mula sa Malacañang para maging bagong chairman ng Philip­pine Sports Commission (PSC).

“To unify the Philippine Olympic Committee and the PSC is the first step,” wika agad ni Garcia, isang champion golfer at dati nang naging Commissioner ng sports agency.

Si Garcia ang pumalit kay Harry Angping na hindi nakasundo ni Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, Jr. ang tiyuhin ni Pangulong Benigno “Noy­noy” Aquino III.

Bilang una niyang ak­syon, sinabi ni Garcia na gusto niyang tutukan ang hinaharap at hindi ang na­ka­raang pamamahala ni Angping sa PSC.  

“It’s time to look forward. What happened the past year should never happen again,” ani Garcia. “It’s time for the PSC and the POC to work together. One cannot be without the other.”

Unang naupo si Garcia bilang PSC commissioner sa panahon ni dating Pangulong Joseph Estrada noong 1998 bago nagbitiw sa pagpasok ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo noong 2000.

Ngunit ang kanyang re­signation paper ay tinanggap lamang ng Palasyo ma­tapos ang isang taon.

Noong 2003, ibinalik ni Arroyo si Garcia bilang Com­missioner ngunit mu­ling nagbitiw ang tubong Bacolod noong 2008.

Bukod kay Garcia ang iba pang nailuklok ng Malacañang bilang mga Commissioners ng komisyon ay sina dating tennis chief Buddy Andrada, baseball official at dating basketball star Chito Loyzaga, Little League Philippines admi­nistrator Jolly Gomez at champion swimmer Akiko Thomson.

Si Thomson ang ta­nging naiwan sa nakaraang administrasyon ni Angping, itinalaga ni dating Pangulong Gloria Macapagal Ar­royo kasama sina Commissioners Jose Mundo, Erik Loretizo at Fr. Vic Uy.

Nailagay naman si Dina Bernardo ng dragon boat association bilang executive director.

“Richie Garcia has been there before. He knows what to do. I welcome the appointments,” wika ni Ang­ping.

Bagamat may mga ba­gong opisyales ang PSC, kumolekta lamang ang Philippine delegation ng 3 gold, 6 silver at 9 bronze medals sa nakaraang 16th Asian Games sa Guangzhou, China noong Nob­yembre 12-27.
