Nationals ipinatikim ang galit sa North Korea, hiniya

GUANGZHOU - Ibina­ling ng Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas ang kanilang ngitngit matapos masibak ng South Korea sa quarterfinal round noong Miyerkules sa North Korea, 96-69, para sa tsansang makuha ang fifth place sa 16TH Asian Games basketball competitions sa Ying Dong Gymnasium.

Bagamat nahulog sa classification round, ipina­kita naman ng Nationals ang kanilang pamatay na porma laban sa mga North Koreans.

Ang North Korea ay fourth placer sa Group E sa preliminary round kung saan nila tinalo ang Mongolia, 88-67, at Uzbekistan, 81-70, bago natalo sa Jordan, 80-90.

Sinamantala nina Greg Slaughter, Mac Baracael at Chris Lutz ang mahabang playing time na ibinigay sa kanila ni coach Rajko To­roman.

Kumolekta sina Slaugh­ter, Baracael at Lutz ng pi­nagsamang 28 rebounds, 10 assists at 4 steals para sa Smart Gilas.

Kinuha ng Nationals ang 28-22 lamang sa first period patungo sa 54-37 pagbaon sa North Koreans sa halftime sa likod nina Jayvee Casio, Jason Ballesteros, Sol Mercado at Kelly Williams.

“Obviously, we’re a better team than North Korea,” sabi ni Toroman. “No question, we have a competitive team. It’s a pity we’re not in the semifinals as we couldn’t make our shots against South Korea.”

Isang 17-0 atake ang inilunsad ng Smart Gilas upang tuluyan nang igupo ang North Korea mula sa kanilang 62-37 abante.

Sa pangunguna ng 6-foot-11 na si Slaughter, tinalo ng Nationals ang North Koreans sa rebounding, 50-23.
