Thailand mahigpit na karibal ng RP sa korona

MANILA, Philippines - Ang Thailand pa rin ang inaasahang makakaagawan ng Pilipinas para sa overall crown ng darating na Manny V. Pangilinan In­ternational Friendship Cup.

Isang 11-man roster na pangungunahan ni 2004 Athens Olympic silver medal winner Worapoj Petchkoom ang isasabak ng Thailand Amateur Boxing Association (TABA) para sa naturang torneo.

Nakatakda ang kompetisyon sa Hulyo 14-19 sa Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Forum.

Maliban kay Pet­chkoom, ang iba pang ila­laban ng Thailand ay sina 2009 Laos Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Kaeo Pongprayoon, Chatchai Bujdee, Apichet Seansit at Saylom Ardi.

Si Pongprayoon ang siyang tumalo kay Harry Tanamor para sa gold me­dal sa 48-kg class, habang si Bujdee ang bumigo kay 2006 Doha Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon sa opening round ng kani­lang 54-kg bout.

“So this is going to be a very competitive tournament considering that Thailand is sending over its class A boxers. Hindi po totoong mga so-so entries lang ang ilalaban nila dito,” ani Amateur Boxing Asso­ciation of the Philippi­nes (ABAP executive direc­tor Ed Picson sa PSA sports fo­rum kahapon na itinatagu­yod ng Outlast Battery, PAGCOR, Shakey’s at Accel.

Isang 14-man delegation na binabanderahan nina Laos SEA Games gold medal winner Charlie Suarez, bronze meda­list Rey at Victor Saludar ang isasabak ng ABAP bukod pa kay Asian Indoor Games 51kg champion Annie Albania sa women’s division.

Ang iba pang lalahok sa torneo ay ang China, Chinese-Taipei, Hong Kong, Macau at Sri Lanka.

Ang mga paglalaba­nan ay sa 48kgs., 51kgs., 54kgs., 58kgs., 60kgs., 64kgs. at 69kgs.sa men’s class, samantalang nasa women’s side naman ang 46 kgs., 48 kgs., 51kgs., 54kgs. at 57 kgs.

Ang cash prize na $1,000 ang naghihintay sa mga gold medal winners.
