Ateneo, Dragon boat team tatanggap ng citation award

MANILA, Philippines - Pangungunahan ng back-to-back UAAP men’s basketball champion Ateneo at Dragon boat team na nanalo ng record-breaking na dalawang gintong medalya sa world meet ang listahan ng mga personalidad at entities na pagkakalooban ng citation sa gaganaping PSA Annual Awards Night na presinta ng Coca-Cola.

Ginapi ng Blue Eagles ang University of the East Warriors sa makapigil-hiningang best-of-three finals upang masikwat ang kanilang ikalawang dikit na cage championship, bago idinagdag ang University Games title at ang Philippine Collegiate Champions League sa kanilang koleksyon ng mga tropeo.

Sa kabilang dako, binasag naman ng dragon boat team ang kanilang sariling record sa 200-meter premiere open, bago nanalo uli ng panibagong ginto sa mixed category sa 9th International Dragon Boat Racing Championship sa Regatta Center sa Czech Republic matapos igupo ang 24 iba pang bansa sa isang linggong meet.

Walong iba pa ang tatanggap ng PSA citations sa Marso 1 sa Manila Hotel, na presinta rin ng Smart, Pacific Online System Corporation, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Har­bour Centre, PCSO, Accel at Filoil-Flying V.

Kabilang dito sina, race champion Enzo Pastor, powerlifter Lily Pecante, Ajay Pathak, Hong Sung Chon, Josephine Medina, Ernie Gawilan at ang Philippine Olympic Festival.

Ang lahat ng 10 awardees ay bahagi ng 2009’s best and brightness na pararangalan ng sportwriting fraternity ng bansa sa dalawang oras na seremonya kung saan si Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ang siyang special guest of honor.

Pararangalan naman si bo­xing superstar Manny Pacquiao bilang Athlete of the Decade, habang ang tatanggap naman ng pinakamaningning na Athlete of the Year award ay sina pool player Rubilen Amit, trackters Marestella Torres at taekwondo jins Cecille Alarilla, Janice Lagman at Rani Ann Ortega.

Babanderahan naman ni bo­xing women’s champion An­nie Albania ang 19 iba pang personalidad na bibigyan ng major award ng pinakamatandang media organization sa bansa na binubuo ng mga editors at sportswriters mula sa iba’t ibang national broadsheets at tabloids.

Makakasama ni Albania bi­lang major awardees sina Ba­rangay Ginebra’s JayJay Helterbrand (pro basketball), Wesley So (chess), Joel Calderon (cycling), Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes at Francisco ‘Django’ Bustamante (billiards), Chihiro Ikeda at Elmer Salvador (golf), Arniel Ferreira (track and field), John Baylon (judo), Cecil Mamiit at Francis Casey Alcantara (tennis), jockey Jesus B. Guce at Don Enrico (horseracing) at Brian Viloria, Donnie Nietes, Nonito Donaire Jr., Marvin Sonsona at Rodel Mayol (pro boxing).
