MANILA, Philippines - Nailista ng RP Davis Cupper ang 4-1 panalo laban sa Kiwis ngunit hindi dito natatapos ang kanilang trabaho.

Sinabi ni RP No. 1 netter Cecil Mamiit na mas mahirap na landas ang kanilang susuungin pagdating sa Group I ng Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone kung saan maglalaro ang Australia, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei, Japan at Korea.

“Looking at the draw, hopefully, we could get some matches here. It’s just getting through the first round,” sabi ng 33-anyos na si Mamiit na umaasang madadala ang bansa sa World Group playoffs sa 2010.

Sa kanilang pagpasok sa Group I noong nakaraang taon, natalo ang Nationals sa Japan (0-5), Uzbekistan (2-3) at Kazakhstan (0-5) kasunod ang muling pagbagsak sa Group II.

Sa bisa ng 3-0 panalo sa dalawang singles at isang doubles, tuluyan nang sinibak ng RP Team ang New Zealand sa Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group II third round tie noong Sabado sa Philippine Columbian Association tennis courts sa Paco, Manila.

 “We definitely have the talent but we should also take care of the situation and do the right way,” ani Mamiit, nakasama si Eric Taino noong 2008 sa Group I. “We have to get this guys lots of exposures, the need to travel a little bit more and that will help them develop their game.” (RC)
