Tañamor sumuntok ng gold sa Moscow

Bago man lamang matapos ang taon kung saan nanggaling sa isang nakadidismayang kampanya si Harry Tañamor, ganap na inangkin ng beteranong light flyweight ang gintong medalya sa 1st Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Cup sa Megasport Palace sa Moscow, Russia.

Tinalo ng 31-anyos na si Tañamor si Yampier Hernandez ng Cuba, 15-7, sa finals ng light-fly-weight division para ibulsa ang top prize na $10,000 (P480,000).

Bago sumabak sa nasabing torneo, nagmula muna si Tañamor sa isang first-round exit sa 29th Olympic Games sa Beijing, China kung saan siya natalo kay Manyo Planque ng Ghana.

“Malaking bagay talaga itong pagkapanalo ko,” wika ng tubong Zamboanga City na naging silver medalist sa 2007 World Championship sa Chicago at kauna-unahan namang gold medal winner sa 1st AIBA President’s Cup.

“Alam natin na natalo si Harry sa nakaraang Beijing Olympics and what better way to end the year than to get the first-ever World championship,” wika ni outgoing Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president Manny T. Lopez.

Bago harapin si Hernandez sa final round, tinalo muna ni Tañamor si Murodjon Rasulov ng Tajikistan, 8-4, sa quarterfinals at isinunod naman si Lukasz Masczczyk ng Poland, 12-4, sa semifinals.

Nakarating naman si Hernandez sa finals sa panalo kay Belik Galanov ng Mongolia, 13-5 at Birzhan Zhakypov ng Kazakhstan, 13-3.

Hindi naman lumahok si World Championship at Beijing Olympics gold medalist Zhu Shiming, tumalo kay Tañamor sa finals ng 2007 World Championships sa Chicago, ng China. (Russell Cadayona)
