Taekwondo gold ni Singson binawi

BANGKOK Nagdesisyon ang Southeast Asian Games Federation Council na bawiin ang gintong medalya ng taekwondo jin na si Esther Marie Singson, at dalawa pang atleta na natuklasang positibo sa mga ipinagbabawal na substance sa isinagawang drug test matapos ang kanilang pagkapanalo sa 23rd Manila Southeast Asian Games noong nakaraang taon.
Gayunpaman, nakatakas si Singson sa two-year ban gayundin sina Rayner Kionsiong ng Malaysia na naka-silver sa karatedo at bowler Happy Ari Dewanti ng Indonesia na nakasilver din.
Dahil dito, maaari nang lumahok ang tatlo sa 2007 SEA Games na iho-host naman ng Thailand ngunit nasa kani-kanilang federation ang huling pagdedesisyon na maaari ding magbigay sa kanila ng sanction.
Naging positibo si Singson, naka-gold sa 55-kgs category, sa diuretics matapos itong uminom ng slimming tea dalawang linggo bago ang biennial meet noong Disyembre 2005 sa layunin nitong maabot ang weight limit.
Bunga nito ay nabawasan ng isang ginto ang 113 gold medal production ng Team Philippines na nagsubi rin ng 84-silvers at 94 bronzes at hindi ito makakaapekto sa pagiging overall champion ng bansa.
"Most probably, there will be no other sanction from the Council. But its a different matter with its IF," ani Philippine Center for Sports Medicine (PCSM) head Dr. Raul Canlas. "The Committee already gave its nod to impose a lesser sanction to Singson and the two other athletes. We will present it again to the SEA Games Federation Council for the final approval. Most likely it will be okay but its still up to their IFs which have the final say."
