Magandang ipinakita ng Fil-Am athletes, sana’y maging ‘eye opener’

Dapat magsilbing isang ‘eye-opener’ ang magandang ipinakita ng ilang Fil-American athletes sa nakaraang 23rd Southeast Asian Games.

 Sinabi ni Philippine Olym-pic Committee (POC) presi-dent Jose "Peping" Cojuangco, Jr. na tiyak na mas maganda ang training program ng United States na nakukuha ng mga Fil-Ams kumpara sa ipinaiiral sa Pilipinas.

 "It shows me that there must be better training or better system of developing an athlete abroad than here in the country," ani Cojuangco. "So we better learn that." 

Kabilang sa mga Fil-Ams na kumolekta ng gintong medalya sa 2005 SEA Games ay sina swimmer Miguel Molina at tennis player Cecil Mamiit at Eric Taino.

 Kinilala ang 20-anyos na si Molina bilang ‘most beme-dalled athlete’ sa nasabing biennial meet mula sa nilangoy niyang tatlong gold medal, habang pinagharian naman nina Mamiit at Taino ang men’s singles at doubles event sa tennis competition.

Ayon kay Cojuangco, dapat lang na tanggapin ng mga Fili-pino coaches ang ilang kahi-naan ng kanilang mga prog-rama. 

"I think dapat baguhin na natin ‘yung ating attitude na ganyan. We must be open-minded about the training methods that we can learn abroad. We have to pick up every single advantage that we can by learning also the methods by other people or other countries and adding it to our own system," sabi ng POC chief.  

 Bukod sa pagpapadala ng mga local athletes sa ibang bansa, gusto rin ni Cojuangco na maisabay ang mga local coaches. (Russell Cadayona)
