600 special athletes sali sa National Special Olympic Games

May kabuuang 600 special athletes mula sa buong bansa ang magpapakita ng aksiyon sa 10th Philippine National Special Olympic Games na nakatakda sa Marso 3-5 sa Marikina Sports Center.

Ang Presidential daugh-ter na si Luli Arroyo ang hono-rary chairperson ng nasabing tatlong araw na event kung saan ang mga special ath-letes ay magpapamalas ng kanilang katapangan, deter-minasyon at talento sa athle-tics, aquatics, tenpin bowling, basketball, badminton, soc-cer, table tennis, volleyball at powerlifting.

Ang mga special athletes na nasuring mayroong Autis-tism, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s Syndrome at mentally-retar-dation (Mongoloid) ay iniha-nay ayon sa kani-kanilang edad, kasarian at abilidad na lumaban sa nasabing kom-petisyon.

Ayon kay Special Olym-pics Philippines national sports director Rene Gacu-ma, ang National Games ay isa sa qualifying tournaments para sa mga atleta na haha-sain para sa 2007 Summer Special Olympics Games sa Shanghai, China.

"This early, we want to select the members of the team that will compete in Shanghai so we can have more time to prepare our athletes and further boost their medal chances," paha-yag ni Gacuma.

Noong nakaraang taon, 12 Filipinos ang sumabak sa World Summer Special Olympics sa Dublin, Ireland at nag-uwi sila ng limang gin-tong medalya, apat na silvers at dalawang bronze mula sa bowling, athletics, powerlifting at swimming.

Naglaan naman ang Optometrists Association of the Philippines president na si Dr. Carmen Abesamis-Di-choso ng libreng eye check-up gayundin ang libreng pamamahagi ng salamin sa mga kalahok sa National Games na muling binuhay matapos ang huling pagda-raos nito sa Baguio City may dalawang taon na ang nakakaraan.
