Pinoy boxers tatrangkuhan nina Lerio at Tanamor

PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan - Pangungunahan ng beteranong si Arlan Lerio at fast-rising Harry Tanamor ang determinadong RP boxing team sa pagbubukas ngayon ng 22nd Asian Qualifying Boxing Championships sa Puerto Princesa Coliseum dito.

Nasa isip ni Lerio ang muling biyahe patungong Olympics habang umaasam naman si Tanamor sa isang hakbang patungo sa pagsungkit ng mailap na gintong medalya sa isang linggong event na magsisilbing qualifying patungo sa Athens, Greece.

May kabuuang 212 boxers mula sa 29 bansa kabilang na ang nawasak sa giyerang Iraq at Afghanistan ang nakatakdang makipagrambulan para sa 24 Olympics slots sa 11 weight categories kabi-lang na ang 9 mula sa host Philippines.

Dumating kahapon ang Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Tajikistan at East Timor, na lalahok ng kanilang ikalawang international stint matapos lumahok ito sa Vietnam SEAG noong Disyembre, kasama din ang Iraq, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Chi-na, North at South Korea, India, Japan at Qatar.

Inaasahan namang darating ngayon ang Chinese Taipei, Iran, Kyrghistan, Mongolia, Syria, Pa-kistan, Laos, Afghanistan, Brunei, Lebanon at Turkmenistan.

Bukod kina Lerio at Tanamor, kasama din sa koponan upang makipagsapalaran sina Violito Payla (fly), Junard Ladon (feather), Florencio Ferrer (lightweight), Mark Jason Melligen (lightwelter), Francis Joven (welter), Fil-Am Chris Camat (light-middle) at Maraon Golez (middle).

Dapat bantayan ang Asian powerhouse Kazakhstan at Uzbekistan, na nagwagi ng Olympic golds sa Sydney, pati na rin ang SEAG champion Thailand.

"It’s all systems go," ani Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president Manny Lopez.

"We are confident our athletes will give it their best shot and hopefully gain slots to the 2004 Athens Olympics," dagdag pa ni Lopez, na siya ring secretary-general ng Federation of Asian Amateur Boxers.

Pinamumunuan nina Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes at Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn ang organizing committee kung saan si Lopez ang vice chairman ng meet na suportado ng Philippine Sports Commission, Accel, Revicon at Pacific Heights.
