Kampanya ng Pinoy pugs magandang binuksan ni Ferrer

BANGKOK -- Pinigil ni Florencio Ferrer ang kanyang karibal noong Linggo ng gabi upang buksan ng maganda ang kampanya ng bansa para sa World Amateur Boxing Championships sa Bari Stadium dito.

Ang 20 anyos na si Ferrer, kumakampanya sa welterweight division ay nangailangan lamang ng tatlong minuto para dispatsahin si Herdey Anak nang gawin punching bag ang taga-Brunei na nagpuwersa sa referee na itigil ang laban sa kalagitnaan ng second round at ibigay sa tubong Cadiz City ang RSC-O (Referee-Stopped-Contest-Outclassed) na panalo.

Sa ilalim ng batas ng International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) ang amateur bouts ay may dalawang minuto sa apat na rounds.

"This is a good omen. Florencio's victory gave the RP Revicon Team a head-start in this very tough tournament. I hope this rubs on the other guys, they are in their best conditions and the morale is very high," pahayag ni Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president at Federation of Asian Amateur Boxing (FAAB) secretary-general Manny Lopez.

Ang iba pang miyembro ng Pinoy squad na ipinadala sa biennial meet na ito ng nagtataguyod na Revicon, Pacific Heights, Philippine Sports Com-mission at binihisan ng Accel, ay sina light flyweight Harry Tanamor, flyweight Violito Payla, bantamweight Arlan Lerio at featherweight Joegen Ladon. Sina George Caliwan at Boy Velasco ang mga coach habang si Roger Fortaleza ay kabilang sa referee/judge.

Tangka ni Ferrer ang puwesto sa ikatlong round sa kanyang pakikipagharap sa Romanian pug sa two-session, two-round championships na humatak ng 380 boxers mula sa 64 nations.

Aakyat din ng entab-lado sina Payla at Ladon sa opening bouts ng kani-kanilang weight divisions kontra sa Ukranian at Frenchman, ayon sa pagkakasunod.
