Mondelez Philippines tops resource efficiency awards
MANILA, Philippines - Last month, Mondelez Philippines received an award from the ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Awards under the category of Resource Efficiency, the eighth award received by the company for its Go Green program. Organized by Apex Global (The Academy for Professional Excellence), the awards recognize individuals and organizations for their commitment to sustainable operations.
“Sustainability is about preserving our world and its people,†says Mondelez Philippines general manager Sudip Mall. “We all depend on just one planet. So all of us need to work together and find ways to use less energy, water and other resources, as well as reduce the waste we generate. That’s a mission that we at Mondelez Philippines work on every day.â€
Started some six years ago, Go Green aims to improve the efficiency of the company’s manufacturing plant while ensuring that it helps protect the environment.
For Mondelez Philippines, formerly Kraft Philippines, saving water means using a rainwater harvesting tank, which collects rain water for use around the plant. This was followed by an ultraviolet light and reverse osmosis water treatment facility to allow the recycle and reuse of water from its manufacturing operations.
Electricity use is reduced through the use of solatubes or structures that filter natural light down to offices. Renewable energy – like the sun – is also promoted through the use of solar-powered street lights and a new biomass boiler, which uses biodegradable sources like rice and coconut husks instead of diesel or traditional fuels.
To date, Go Green has saved water equivalent to 14.5 swimming pools, while energy saved is enough to power its plant for 4.3 months. The carbon emissions saved are equivalent to 137 airplane trips from Manila to Australia.
