- Ghio Ong, Helen Flores -

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines won four medals — one gold, two silver and one bronze — in the recently concluded 5th International Earth Science Olympiad held in Modena, Italy.

The winners were Williard Joshua Jose of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) in Diliman, Quezon City (gold); Christoper Jan Landicho of PSHS Bicol Region Campus and Charles Kevin Tiu of St. Jude Catholic School in Manila (silver); and John Allan Olesco of the Aquinas University Science High School (bronze).

The IESO, which was held from Sept. 5 to 14, is the premiere international earth science competition for secondary school students 17 years old and below.

It was the first time that the competition was held in Italy. The Philippines hosted the IESO in Bicol in 2008.

The competition covers astronomy, geology and geophysics, atmospherics and meteorology.
