14 RP classics in Pusan film fest
MANILA, Philippines - Fourteen Filipino films will be shown in the Retrospective Section of the 14th Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea from October 8 to 16.
The Film Development Council of the Philippines said the final list for the section titled “Mabuhay Pinoy Indie Cinema” includes films released as early as the 1950s, as well as those that premiered only this year. Five independent films will also be showcased in the New Currents section, the FDCP reported.
Leading the retro lineup is Manuel Conde’s 1950 historical epic “Genghis Khan,” believed to be the best screen adaptation of the life of the Mongol conqueror.
Other films to be screened include “Insiang” by legendary Filipino director Lino Brocka; “Passionate Strangers” directed by National Artist for Film Eddie Romero; “Oliver” by Nick Deocampo; “Sakay” by Raymond Red; “Perfumed Nightmare” by Kidlat Tahimik; “Manila By Night” by the late National Artist Ishmael Bernal; “Itim” Mike de Leon; “Criminal of Barrio Concepcion” by Lav Diaz;
“The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros” by Aureaus Solito; “The Road to Kalimugtong” by Mes de Guzman; “Kinatay” by Brillante Mendoza who won the Best Director award in Cannes; “Independencia” by Raya Martin; “The Girl at the Breakwater” by Mario O’Hara.
“Astig,” Cinemalaya 2009 Best Full-Length Feature by GB Sampedro, will compete in the New Currents section. Richard Somes’ “Yanggaw” will be screened as part of the Window on Asian Cinema section. “Baseco Bakal Boys” by Ralston Jover will be featured in the Wide Angle section.
Milo Tolentino’s “Blogog” and Borgy Torre’s “Bonsai” will be screened in the Short Films section.
