Comelec: Five-year barangay term can start after November 2 polls

MANILA, Philippines — The proposed five-year term for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials can be implemented without postponing the BSK elections scheduled on Nov. 2, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia said yesterday.
Garcia said an alternative proposal was discussed during a Senate hearing on Monday that would allow the BSKE to proceed as scheduled, with the five-year term taking effect for those elected in the November vote.
The Senate committee on local government has endorsed to the plenary a proposal to move the BSKE from November 2026 to November 2028, with succeeding elections to be held every five years.
The filing of certificates of candidacy for the BSKE is from Sept. 28 to Oct. 5. Some P8 billion has already been spent for the preparations, Garcia said.
