MPBL open to appeal

MANILA, Philippines — MPBL CEO Joe Ramos said yesterday the Bacolod coach and players who were meted indefinite suspensions on the basis of red cards may appeal the sanction during the process of investigation. The red cards were issued on the heels of Bacolod’s 100-64 loss to Bulacan last July 28 as the team went scoreless in the last 7:48 with six turnovers, seven missed field goal attempts and four flubbed free throws.

MPBL commissioner Emmerson Oreta said the suspensions were a result of a long period of monitoring. “We issue a yellow card as warning then a red card,” he said. “We pay an independent group Sports Radar to track our games. Two days after the Bacolod-Bulacan game, we called the coaches and players to a meeting. I’m a retired pro player so I understand na kung minsan, may maguutos to do this or that. It’s why I talk to our players before and after a game, sometimes even during halftime.”

Ramos said the coaches and players may be victims. “Kawawa sila kaya we’re doing due process but for the meantime, may preventive and administrative suspension,” he said. “It’s difficult to prove game-fixing. Back in 2018, we went to court to charge players but the case has dragged. Even in the NBA, it’s hard to prove. Our first step is to strengthen the system of monitoring with government agencies. I’ve told players that if they’re not happy with management because they’re not being paid, then don’t show up for games but never disrespect the sport.”

Ramos said MPBL founder Manny Pacquiao has sustained the league for eight years at his own expense. “Abonado si Boss Manny,” he said. “All he wants is to play fair and clean, provide enjoyment to fans and a livelihood for coaches, players and staff. What he did in the ring, he’d like players to do the same on the court – play hard with integrity and discipline.”

Ramos said MPBL has submitted documents to SBP for affiliation and SBP executive director Erika Dy said the application will be tackled in the next Board meeting. Ramos also said MPBL will meet with GAB officials on Thursday to discuss the next steps in getting to the bottom of the Bacolod mess.
