CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur — Kazakhstan flew to the country to accomplish what it has never done before — rule the AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup.

The Kazakhs are slowly inching closer to that goal after they slew the fancied Vietnamese, 18-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13, on Friday to sweep Pool B in five outings at5 the Candon Sports Arena here.

Kristina Belova, Zhana Syroyeshkina and Tatyana Yatskiv were Kazakhstan’s three-headed dragon as they unloaded 21, 21 and 20 points, respectively, to claim the Pool B top seeding with a pristine 5-0 record in pool play.

Kazakhstan, runner-up two years ago in Manila and semifinalist last year in Hanoi, would battle the loser between Pool A’s South Korea and Chinese Taipei, which are both unbeaten in four outings, in their match being played as of press time.

The winner of that duel will battle Vietnam, which fell to 4-1.

“This game was really important but we’re prepared for this game and I think we did a great job,” said Belova.

It was indeed a massive win for Kazakhstan as it dealt the only stain to Vietnam’s once perfect slate of 23 straight triumphs that started in 2023 and resulted in three straight crowns in this annual meet.

Thi Thanh Thuy Tran, more popularly known as T4, unleashed a match-best 25 points, all from attacks.

But the long-time Vietnamese captain couldn’t do it alone and missed her former spiking partner Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen, who decided not to play due to personal reasons.
