A summer of fun and learning at Miriam College

Miriam College has an array of fun and informative programs lined up for the summer to keep everyone productive in the coming months. There is something for kids, teens and adults including special classes for children who are deaf. Programs include: Academic Enrichment: Appreciating Filipino Literature for Children, Basic Speed Reading Program, Enhancement Program for Reading/Math For Students Who are Deaf, Young Women In STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Series; Art and Dance: ballet, hip hop, digital art, 3D modelling, manga drawing and cosplay photography; Music: film scoring workshop, rock band ensemble, theater singing ensemble, keyboard and piano ensemble; Sports: baskteball, chess, badminton, kung fu, football, volleyball, softball, and swimming; and Personal and Growth and Skills Development: cooking classes, Little Chef, Baking With Dad or Mom, Gerontology Course, cooking, and disaster preparedness

U.P. Film Institute summer workshops 2015

The UP Film Institute offers various courses this April, including Digital Video Production (April 6-10); Non-linear Editing (April 11, 18, 25, May 2); Digital Photography (April 11, 18, 25, May 2); Basic Scriptwriting (April 13-17); Intermediate Scriptwriting - Found Stories (April 27 to May 1).

During the month of May, courses offered are Digital Photography in Boracay (May 8-10); Basic Scriptwriting in Boracay (May 8-10); Intermediate Scripwriting in Baguio (May 15-18); Digital Cinematography (May 23, 24, 30, 31); Directing (May 25-29). Fare and accommodations are not included in fee for out-of-town workshops.

The Professional Writer-Mama

Writer’s Block Philippines will arm you with the necessary tools you need to start a professional career in writing – specifically, while raising the kids. The first run of the custom-made The Professional Writer-Mama workshop will be on April 30 (Thursday) 1 pm-5 pm at O2 Space Solutions, Unit 330 Mile Long Building, Amorsolo St., Makati City.

Writer’s Block founders, Ana P. Santos and Nikka Sarthou-Lainez, are collaborating with editor/writer (and mom) Candice Lopez-Quimpo to help attendees chart their writing paths.

This workshop has been especially created to tackle real-life writing dilemmas, while taking in the consideration real-life parenting obligations.

PETA’s Summer Theater Arts program

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) opens intensive theater arts classes for its annual summer workshop starting April 7-May 20.

Its Children’s Theater courses, for ages 6-8 and 9-12, enable children to explore and experience music, movement and dance, visual arts, storytelling, drama improvisation, poetry and short story writing.

PETA’s Teen Theater course, for ages 13-16, mixes creative drama, creative sounds and music, creative writing, creative body movements and dance, visual arts as well as improvisational theater and new media.

Aspiring actors, from 17 years old and up, can also acquire fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes in improvisational theater production, theater history, theater appreciation, aesthetics and criticism.

PETA’s Basic Acting course allows participants to have a series of dialogues with seasoned theater artists coupled with motivated acting exercises, while the Advanced Acting is designed for students with strong backgrounds in performance that wish to pursue a career as professional actors, taught by no less than Nonon Padilla.

The Creative Musical Theater course provides students the chance to study the principles of composition and organization in performing for musical theater.

The PETA Summer Program will be held at the PETA Theater Center in New Manila, Quezon City and in the Meridian International College (MINT) in Taguig City.

Virgin Labfest 11 writing fellowship program

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is now accepting applications for the Virgin Labfest 11 Writing Fellowship Program which will be held on June 30 to July 12.

The fellows will take part in lectures, discussions, and workshops. The Fellowship Program will culminate in a staged reading of the fellows’ works on July 12 at the CCP Bulwagang Amado Hernandez.

Applicant must be 29 years old or below, not have had any play produced by a professional theater company or published in a literary journal, nor have won in any playwriting/screenwriting competition.

Move harmoniously at the Bothmer Workshops

 Learn how to move harmoniously in order to gain a stronger relationship with your body as Martin Baker, founding director of Bothmer Movement International, conducts a full-day introductory workshop on Mar. 28 in Quezon City, followed by a 6-day intensive workshop from April 6-11 in UP Diliman. He will also conduct a workshop in Cebu on Mar. 30-31.

Baker travels all over the world to run training sessions for teachers and other movement students. He brings his expertise to the Philippines for the first time. He will be conducting exercises that can be used to maximize performance in sports, communicate messages through movement, help those who are suffering from illnesses that limit body movement, among other practical applications.

Studio 116 Ballroom Dancing course

Studio 116 offers the T3 Teacher Training Course where participants will learn modern standard dances such as waltz, tango, quickstep, foxtrot and Viennese waltz; and Latin American dances such as rumba, cha cha, jive, samba and paso doble at Studio 116 Dance School at G/F of L.R.I. Plaza, 210 Nicanor Garcia Street, Bel-Air Village 2, Makati City.

The programs are crafted especially for teachers of Grades 11 and 12 and dancesports coaches.

All participants who complete the training will receive a Studio 116 certificate of participation. The participant will receive official certification from TESDA if he or she passes the NCII Examination.

Public school teachers get 50 percent off. The first batch of the T3 program starts on April 6 (and ends on April 28). There will be optional review classes on May 4. The NC II Examination takes place on May 29.

Brown Movement writing workshop

Brown Movement for Cultural Advancement, Inc or Kilusang Kayumanggi announces a writing workshop for children and young adults (7 to 18 years) starting April 13. One of the country’s seasoned writers will facilitate the 8-session workshop intended to improve the participants’ grammar, writing style, reading choices, and more. Registration is now ongoing. Summer at the Ballet Philippines Dance School

Starting on April 7, dance students from all over the country will flock to the Cultural Center of the Philippines for the five week-long summer dance workshop, concluding with performances on May 9 and 10 at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. Scholarship auditions for provincial applicants will be held on April 7.

Classes are also offered at the SM Aura Premiere. Aside from children’s classical and modern ballet classes, the school at SM Aura also offers the Ballet Philippines Fitness Program workout, Ladies’ Ballet, Active Stretch, and Flamenco dance classes.

Margherita “Meg” Vasselli will enrich advanced hip hop students’ vocabularies in New Style Hiphop with classes at Ballet Philippines Studio One from April 8 to May 2 and a master class for choreographers on May 9. CCA Manila’s young chefs boot camp

CCA Manila offers a series of basic and semi-advanced cooking classes that are designed for young culinary enthusiasts from age 5 to 16 years old that will feature different recipes and culinary techniques. Classes will be held at the CCA main campus in Katipunan and at The Podium.

This year’s YCBC cooking programs at the Podium branch are: Baking 101 for teens and Little Chef for kids age 5 to 10 years old. Programs offered at the Katipunan branch for teens 11 to 17 years old are: My Ultimate Comfort Food; Cooking My Way Through Asia; Junior Culinary & Baking Essentials; and Baking 101. For beginners aged 5 to 10 years old, the Little Chef program will be offered. 

Enrollment fee will also cover the student’s essential classroom items like disposable kitchen uniforms, recipe manuals, ingredients and tools.

Dawn to Dusk Photo Adventure

BenCab Museum and the Camera Club of the Philippines will offer a photo adventure with Tilak Hettige on April 17 to 19. Course includes a Fundamentals of Digital Photography talk, classroom lectures, and various shooting activities. Participants should bring a camera, tripod, and flash; laptop and flash drive if possible; and rubber boots and slippers for a shooting session in the river. Other shooting assignments include photographing in a Kalinga hut, outdoor shooting with cultural dancers and models, and more. Both entry level and advanced photographers are welcome. Lodging and transport to Baguio City must be made by personal arrangement.

Foldabots workshop at Ayala Museum

Ayala Museum presents Foldabots: Robot Making workshop on April 12, 19, 26, and May 2, at 10 am to 12 nn.?Foldabots is a series of cut-out cardboard robots that turn into cars, robots, and animals. This 4-day workshop will teach participants to invent their own characters, draw 3d robots and build the toys out of cut-out paper. This workshop will help the kids to build their confidence as well. Workshop facilitator Jomike Tejido is currently an Architect of Tejido Architecture and Art. For ages 7 and up, the workshop fee is inclusive of materials, handouts, snacks, a certificate, one day free admission to the museum and one day free access to the library. Deadline of reservations is April 4.
