Depression and faith

FINDING REFUGE AND STRENGTH - Dr. Harold J. Sala - The Philippine Star

You are struggling with depression. You recognize the symptoms. You’ve taken an inventory in your habits. Now you are asking yourself, “Have I caused my problem and is there something that I should do to solve it?”

One type of depression is the result of allowing ourselves to get cornered or trapped in a bad decision. Another source may be chemical such that it is dictated by your DNA. It is not because you are living with something you know is not in your interest or choosing to cover up sin. But regardless of the cause, the fact is you have become a victim of depression.

When you find yourself in this situation, you need to voice these three very difficult words, “I need help!” So whom do you tell? You may actually need professional help but before you seek it, start confiding to your spouse or your pastor. Many times those who know you best are the ones who can help you work through your problem.

But there is one thing that you can be sure of: God answers prayers for help in many different ways. Sometimes He gives us an immediate answer, lifting the cloud of depression. Sometimes He sends a person who listens, who can serve as a sounding board and help you see precisely what you need to do to work through the gloom.

Even if you are tempted to believe otherwise, remember that depression does not originate from God. Some of our depression comes by ignoring the directives He gives, refusing to live as He intends us to live. God is the One who brings health, wholeness and healing to our broken hearts and lives. While depression is not a friend, it can prod you to Him who is a friend and stays closer than a brother. When depression knocks, let God answer the door.
