God knows who you are

“I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.” Revelation 3:8

In 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick announced to the patrons of the Eagle pub in Cambridge, “We have discovered the secret of life.” It was DNA, and unraveling the spiral, tightly wrapped chromosomes that are part of the DNA markers made personal identification absolutely certain. A hair from your head, a tiny amount of body fluid, or a sliver of flesh from under your fingernail identifies you positively.

How does God keep track of you? Does He have a DNA bank or a fingerprint laboratory, or did He make note of the size of your skull when you were born? Such trivial questions almost insult Him who knows you better than a mother does her own child.

Some folks think that God is too busy or too old or too disinterested to pay much attention to us individually, but nothing could be further from the truth. The Bible says clearly that God not only knows each of us individually and loves us, but everything about our lives is known to Him as well. Hebrews 4:13 says, “He knows about everyone, everywhere. Everything about is bare and wide open to the all-seeing eyes of our living God; nothing can be hidden from him to whom we must explain all that we have done” (TLB).

I take great comfort in the words of the seven letters to the churches of Asia Minor, where God says repeatedly, “I know...” And because He knows, I can rest securely knowing that I am not lost in the blur of millions of people, but that as a father knows and loves his children, He knows and cares for me as an individual. He cares for you, too!

Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun. However many years a man may live, let him enjoy them all. But let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything to come is meaningless. Be happy, young man, while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment.
