New National Book Award trophy

MANILA, Philippines - Young sculptor Michael Cacnio joins the likes of Eduardo Castrillo, Manuel Baldemor, and National Artist Napoleon Abueva, in designing this year’s National Book Awards trophy.

“An open book sets you free, unfolds secrets and allows growth with no boundaries,” Cacnio says, explaining the significance of the 2009 NBA trophy design which features a growing tree in an open book made in his signature brass.

Cacnio’s signature style is marked by visual commentaries on everyday Filipino scenes, ranging from the lightness of childhood games to the darker subjects of materialism and human fallibility. His work evokes a wide range of emotions: from the touching realization of unconditional familial love to deep admiration for the quiet dignity of humble workers.

As he marks his second decade in the Philippine art scene in 2011, he continues to captivate audiences with his recent explorations with color in Balloon Series.

Aside from Castrillo, Baldemor, and Abueva, other renowned artists who have designed and donated the National Book Award trophy include Agnes Arellano, Cesare and Jean Marie Syjuco, Edgar Doctor, Gino Gonzalez, Tito Sanchez, and Glenn Cagandahan.

The 28th National Book Awards winners will be announced during the awarding ceremonies at the Ayala Museum on November 14.
