And Easter comes

IN MY BASKET - Lydia Castillo -
Today we celebrate Easter Sunday, "Pasko ng Pagkabuhay", a re-birth. We’d like to take this as a re-awakening of values, beliefs and consciousness. Profound? Not really, if we equate this with the way we, homemakers, are doing our duties at home. Every day there’s a challenge, to save and work on a budget (shrinking fast), serve healthy meals and care for our family. Prices, being as volatile as they are, often cause us much emotional stress.

To help house managers like us, we have endeavored to visit selected supermarkets in the Metro Manila area and environs, look at and examine the costs of commodities normally needed by a household, and list them here for ready reference when one goes shopping. It could be that due to deadline considerations, some prices may have gone up a bit from the time we did this research (two weeks ago) to when this sees print, but this is anyway a good barometer.

No, we are not discarding the wet markets where a lot of our womenfolk still do their regular marketing. But they are spread out, much more than the malls and the supermarket locations, that we need to find enough time to go around, include as much as we can in the list, and really take a good look at what they are selling as much as to see how competitive their prices are. We reckon we can do this within the next two or three weeks, after which we will be able to give you the corresponding price chart.

If some readers have special items they want researched, please let us know through our email. That would be a big help and we will try to come up with a more comprehensive listing.

In the meantime, here is the chart.
