In 1954, dahlings, the first Zobel Cup was held at the Manila Polo Club’s East Field. It was sponsored by Jacobo Zobel, an outstanding polo player and pillar of the club. A full moon ago, the Jacobo Zobel Cup was again played exactly where it debuted some 48 years ago.

Jacobo Zobel, palanggas, is the father of Don Enrique Zobel, himself a polo patron not only here but in other countries. Today the Zobel name still stands proud in polo circles with Iñigo Zobel as one of the top players and the famille as generous patrons of the sport.

The Low Goal match had the Red and White teams playing in four chukkers. At the end, the Red team of Osang Yulo, Jimboy Dulay, Cooch Lynch and Jun Juban won over Sonny and Freddie Borromeo, Vince Bitong and Lance Sheperd, 8-4.

The six-chukker High Goal match started right after the ceremonial throw-in by Sachiko Zobel. The Calatagan team of Iñigo Zobel, Ricky Yabut, Mark Field and Anthony Filamor beat out Los Tamaraos of Bobby Aguirre,Tom Morley, Henry Brett and Jose Constantino.

During the half full moon, dahlings, polo patron and Banco Filipino vice chairman Albert "Bobby" Aguirre hosted the Tomas B. Aguirre Cup also at the Polo Club.

Their Los Tamaraos team, palanggas, has been playing in England since 1998, competing in the Queen’s, Warwickshire and Ashton Cups and the British Open, even reaching the finals in the latter during the autumn 2001 season. The large crowd was welcomed by BF chairman Teodoro Arcenas Jr., Bobby A. and Catharine Aguirre-Hernandez and other bank officers.

In the prelim Low Goal match, the Reds Edwin Arce, Sonny and Freddie Borromeo and Jose Constantino triumphed with 6 goals over the Whites Vince del Rosario, Rosanna Yulo, Jun Juban and Tony Garcia. In the main game the Whites won 14-7, with Henry Brett emerging as MVP. Beautiful trophies were awarded to the winners by Chairman Arcenas together with Sen. Nene Pimentel, Rep. Amelita Villarosa and Catherine A.-H. assisted by MPC president Pol Ascalon.
