A salute to Salud
A festive celebration was set at the Tesoro’s main store on Arnaiz Avenue in Makati City recently to commemorate the brand’s late co-founder Salud Tesoro’s 100th birth anniversary. Tesoro’s was established in 1945 from the ashes of World War II.
During the celebration aptly called “A Salute to Salud,” Maria Isabel “Beng” Tesoro, Salud’s youngest daughter and the brand’s group CEO, said, “Today, we commemorate the birth centenary of our late co-founder, our mother Salud Tesoro. Through her exemplary values and principles in life, Tesoro’s continues to develop new designs and concepts while maintaining our core collection of heritage crafts, giving us an identity distinct from typical handicraft stores.”
The event gathered loyal patrons including Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Gemma Cruz-Araneta, Dr. Jimmy Laya, and members of the diplomatic community. It is actually the commencement of a yearlong program that will culminate with the celebration of Tesoro’s 70th year in business in October. Present to welcome guests were Tesoro siblings John Benjamin Tesoro, Dettie Tesoro-Carunungan, Dolly Tesoro-Arit, Bobby Tesoro, Mita Tesoro-Gutierrez, Tito Tesoro, lawyer Lulu Tesoro-Castañeda and Alice Tesoro-Guerrero.
Guests learned more about Salud Tesoro through a speech made by former Philippine Ambassador to Spain Isabel Caro Wilson, who narrated how Salud’s life transitioned from being an orphan (who only had enough centavos to buy two pieces of bananas and could not even pursue her dreams of becoming a teacher) to becoming a successful manager of her very own company.
Because of Salud’s notable contribution in boosting Filipino ingenuity at its finest, the Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) released the commemorative Salud S. Tesoro Birth Centenary stamps. The stamp was unveiled during the event led by PHLPost assistant postmaster general Luis Carlos.
Built in 1995, the Tesoro’s flagship store on Arnaiz Avenue was given a new façade, totally covered with Tesoro’s iconic embroidery design by designers Mark Wilson and Nikki Escalona-Tayag. Jose Lirio, the company’s creative consultant, took charge of the store interiors.
