Classic & staple

THE PEPPER MILL - Pepper Teehankee - The Philippine Star

What do Bruno Mars, John Travolta, Justin Bieber and the Duchess of Cambridge Catherine Middleton have in common? They all wear Sebago.

Recently, the shoe brand launched its Greenbelt 3 store with athletes like James Younghusband, Nate Burkey and siblings Anton and Armand del Rosario and models Kelly Misa and Ornussa Cadness in attendance.

Since the 1940s, pairs and pairs of Sebago Docksides have become the iconic and premium boat shoes. This shoe type even became a preppy staple in the ‘80s and made a triumphant return in 2008. Eric Poon of Vane, an upscale New York fashion collective that features high quality and art-infused fare, recalls that kids in New York started to don fashion pieces their grandparents would wear; in particular the boat shoe. Along with the emergence of nautical fashion, this ushered Sebago back into the limelight.

For 65 years, Sebago has been known as a brand where hand stitching actually means something and where cobblers still make shoes by hand not only for the sake of  tradition but also to maintain a level of craftsmanship. In an industry where mass production has mostly compromised quality, the footwear company continues to stay true to craft, something only a few brands can attest to.

The brand has surpassed generations and has lived through all kinds of fashion trends — a proof that a fashion classic can always be a wardrobe staple.

Igniting Filipino pride

Our local athletes bring pride to the country. They take it seriously when they participate and excel in international competitions. With this in mind, Vaseline Men is sending the Vaseline Men XTERRA Philippine Team to the XTERRA Off-road Triathlon Global Championship in Maui, Hawaii.

Vaseline Men announced that it is organizing a five-member team that will represent the Philippines in the XTERRA global championship on Oct. 28.

The team will be headed by coach Noy Jopson with two celebrity triathletes Matteo Guidicelli and Drew Arellano. Joining the team are two triathletes who will be selected through the XTERRA Tri-Outs Camp: Race to Maui.

A three-day camp was held at Timberland Heights in San Mateo, Rizal to test and prepare the participants for the gruelling challenges of the competition this month.

The camp had seven contenders who wanted to be in the team: swimbikerun.ph’s Carlos De Guzman, Second Wind’s Hector Yuzon, Takbo.ph’s Jinoe Gavan, ultra-marathoner Mark Hernandez, chiropractor Dr. Martin Camara, Health Food president Raffy Zamora and Sutherland Global Services corporate training manager Redg Plopinio.

(You can vote for your favorite triathlete and get a chance to win P50,000 in cash by logging on to Vaseline Men’s YouTube page and watch the videos of the Vaseline Men XTERRA Tri-Outs Camp.)
