Pitoy Moreno named National Artist

OH YES, IT'S JOHNNY! - Johnny Litton -

In recognition of his significant contributions to the development of Philippine art, Jose “Pitoy” Moreno, the “Fashion Czar of Asia,” was recently named as the 2009 National Artist for Fashion Design by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. In a spectacular career that has reached its golden years, Pitoy has truly made an indelible mark in the fashion industry. His unsurpassed embroidery, exquisite beadwork and luxurious hand painting have produced highly-praised collections that have toured around the globe: from Malaysia to Moscow, from Paris to Japan and from Barcelona to Bangkok.

He made the country proud as he introduced the words jusi, piña and lepanto into the world of fashion. Aside from dressing the First Ladies of the Philippines in his trademark ternos, his masterful creations have also adorned regal society beauties, and prominent heads of state and royalties such as Nancy Reagan, Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Queen Sirikit of Thailand, Queen Margarretta of Bulgaria, Queen Sophia of Spain, Princess Margaret of Britain, Princess Suga of Japan, the Marquesa de Villaverde, Cristina Ford, Margot Fonteyn and Deeda Blair. With all his noteworthy achievements, Pitoy Moreno is indeed one fashion icon who rightfully deserves to be called a National Artist.

Congratulations and Mabuhay!
