Spirit of ’79

T’was better than prom night, for there were no watchful parents, chaperones and teachers to keep a suspicious eye on you. Just loads of fun, good food and wine and all the cute guys (except that most of them now wore wedding bands)! And so it came to pass that the members of high school batch ’79 of the Assumption Convent in San Lorenzo Village, Makati danced like they were 23 years younger at a fund-raising concert sponsored a few sleeps ago at the chi-chi Manila Polo Club in Forbes Park, palanggas.

The truth, palanggas, is that the prom queens of 1979 are now parents (no nuns, dahlings!), and the cute guys in their midst are their husbands.

Moi
sneaked in past midnight and not one of my palanggas from that super beauty-and-brains batch noticed moi!

What with the music of the Overdrive band, and the heat of the night as these Assumptionistas rocked, rocked and rocked! Natch!

Spearheaded by HS ’79 class president Dr. Carmela Ongsiako Isabela, the fund-raising was held for the benefit of the Laura Vicuna Foundation for street children and the Assumption Mission Schools. Noblesse oblige, di bala, palanggas!

The tres dazzling night had hotshot sponsors like Philippine Airlines (which donated two tickets to Hong Kong won by looker Aissa Barrera Cojuangco); our very own Philippine STAR, the only paper you read from cover to cover; the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Zetamark (GM Louie Vargas gave away fabi Calvin Klein watches won by Andie Recto-Montenegro and Mitos Pacis), Singapore Airlines, Joey Concepcion, Mikey Cojuangco, Plantation Bay, Citibank, PEOPLE Asia magazine (whose editor-in-chief moi palangga Joanne Rae Ramirez, is a proud member of batch ’79), Vise Versa (by the fashionable Rina Go), Club Panoly, Mercelles (which gave away a pearl bracelet won by oh-so-slim Arlina Arrozal de Jesus), PLDT, True Value, Dish, Cibo, Soleil, El Comedor, Vicky Belo, Orient Spa, Wendy’s, Globe Telecom, and SC Johnsons.

See you in 2004, for your silver jubilee velada, palanggas. And don’t look a day older, dahlings!
