ATENAS, Costa Rica — A dog named Campeon appears in court in Costa Rica during the trial of his former owner, who is accused of mistreating the animal.

"Today begins the first trial of the implementation of Law 9458, the animal welfare law. For us activists, it is extremely important to start this first trial because this marks the beginning of a change in our society in the implementation (of the law, ed) and for the rights of all animals."
