MANILA, Philippines - The Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI), together with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), announced the schools which made it to the national finals of the 2013 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Challenge (MMC) to be held on April 13, at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium in Makati City.
Out of the more than 1,200 students who competed in the regional finals nationwide, 57 students successfully advanced to the final leg of the competition. This year’s national finalists will come from 34 schools composed of 20 public and 14 private schools.
The top schools competing for the Grade 6 individual competition are: University of the Philippines Integrated School (Quezon City); BHC Educational Institution, Inc. (San Fernando, La Union); Tuguegarao East Central School; Brightwoods School (Angeles City); Colegio San Agustin-Biñan (Laguna); Bicol University Integrated Laboratory School (Daraga, Albay); Ormoc City SPED Center; Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; and Precious International School of Davao (Davao City).
For Grade 6 Team Competition, the competing schools are: Legarda Elementary School (Manila); Grace Christian College (Quezon City); Agoo Kiddie Special School (La Union); Tuguegarao East Central School; Philippine Tong Ho Institute (Lucena City); Blessed Lights International Christian Academy (Naga City); St. John’s Institute (Bacolod City); Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Ateneo de Davao University; and Butuan City SPED Center.
For the 4th Year Individual Competition, schools competing are: Camarin High School (Caloocan City); Ateneo de Manila High School (Quezon City); Baguio City National High School; The Peninsula School Bataan (Bataan); Rizal National Science High School-Bicol Campus (Goa, Camarines Sur); Philippine Science High School-Central Visayas Campus (Cebu); Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Aloran Trade High School (Misamis Occidental); and General Santos City National High School.
And for the 4th Year Team Competition, schools competing are: Ramon Magsaysay High School-Cubao (Quezon City); Xavier School (San Juan City); Teodoro Hernaez National High School (Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur); Regional Science High School-Region III (Olongapo City); Los Baños National High School (Laguna); Ligao National High School (Ligao City); Philippine Science High School West Visayas Campus (Iloilo City); Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial Dumaguete Science High School; General Santos City National High School; and Agusan del Sur National High School.
“As early as now, we extend our congratulations to our dear students for reaching this far in the competition,†said MBFI president Aniceto Sobrepeña. “We take pride in staging this competition as it brings once again the country’s finest students,†he continued.
National winners will receive trophies, medals and cash prize — P25,000, 1st placer; P20,000, 2nd placer and P15,000 for the 3rd placer for the elementary level, while P50,000 will be given to 1st placer; P40,000, 2nd placer and P30,000 for the 3rd placer for the fourth year level amounting to a total of P540,000 worth of cash prizes.
Now on its 12th year, MMC is the most widely participated math competition in the country among elementary and high school students. The annual Math Challenge produces winners who get to compete and eventually win in international competitions. Among them is Farrell Eldrian Wu, first place in the Individual Category for Grade 6 of the 2012 Metrobank Math Challenge, who got a perfect score in the 2012 Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) participated by around 500,000 contestants from over 30 countries worldwide.
