ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines - Three educators from Mindanao placed first in all three categories of the national search for the most outstanding Alternative Learning System (ALS) implementers of the Philippines, conducted recently by the Department of Education (DepEd), it was learned here recently. Director Carolina Guerrero of the Bureau of Alternative Learning System (BALS) said the search was undertaken to give appropriate incentives to educators involved in the seven-year-old toilsome field of mobile teaching. Mobile teaching, Guerrero said, was initiated by DepEd to provide basic literacy lessons to school-age children in remote communities who cannot enrol in regular elementary schools due to the far distance of their homes. The BALS chief said Luistro’s directive identified Anabel Ungcad of Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur as topnotcher in the ALS mobile teacher category; Cagayan de Oro City’s Edith Ortega ranked No. 1 in the ALS division education supervisor category; and the ALS district coordinator category was topped by Ma. Luz Morgado of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.
