Books on horseback for Laguna school

MANILA, Philippines – Union Galvasteel Corp. transported books to its adopted Laguna elementary school near Mount Makiling in a means nothing short of the stuff that folklore is made of — the books were carried on horseback up on a 45-minute trek through the mountain said to be the watering hole of fairies.

The Bagong Silang Elementary School received books in English, Science and Math through the Balik Baterya Program of Oriental and Motolite Corp. (OMC) and the Philippine Business for Social Progress.

Proceeds from used lead acid-based batteries returned to OMC may fund social development projects.

Union Galvasteel, a PBSP member company, chose to support the Learning Enhancement Assistance Package, or Project LEAP, which provides books, reading camps, teachers’ trainings, and educational assistance.

Through the years, PBSP member companies’ various donations have reached throughout the Philippines, even in towns inaccessible through conventional transportation.

PBSP has brought books, relief goods and other donations through small boats crossing rivers, the Air Force, by the truckloads and even caught in the war zone.
