MPBL’s Abra Weavers to test mettle in EASL

MANILA, Philippines — A new player has entered the arena.
Reigning Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) champions Abra Weavers will be competing in the 2026-27 East Asia Super League (EASL) season, the league announced Wednesday.
This is the first time a non-PBA team will be representing the Philippines in the EASL since 2018.
"This is a proud moment for the MPBL. From the beginning, our vision has been to create opportunities for Filipino basketball to continue growing. The Abra Weavers have shown what is possible when a team represents its community with ambition, discipline and pride," Manny Pacquiao, founder of the MPBL, said.
"They have the opportunity to represent our league and Philippine basketball against some of the best teams in Asia. We are excited to partner with EASL and look forward to this new chapter together.”
Abra will be joining several other clubs that are set to make their EASL debuts in the upcoming season, which include reigning Japan B.LEAGUE champions Nagasaki Velca, KBL finalists Goyang Sono Skygunners, Macau SAR Champion Macau Hou Chon, and TSG GhostHawks of the P. LEAGUE+.
“Abra has quickly established itself as one of the Philippines’ strongest clubs, and we’re excited to see them compete against Asia’s best,” EASL CEO Henry Kerins said.
“Bringing the MPBL into EASL further strengthens our presence in one of the world’s great basketball nations and represents another significant step forward as we look forward to our biggest and most competitive campaign yet.”
Abra is spearheaded by Dave Ildefonso, Shaun Ildefonso, Jake Figueroa and JD Cagulangan.
The PBA’s Meralco Bolts competed in the previous EASL season, finishing with a 3-3 win-loss record and barely missing the quarterfinals.
