Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Senator Risa Hontiveros on Friday said she is “seriously considering” a possible bid for the presidency in the upcoming elections, stressing the need to field a “strong and hopeful” candidate for Filipino voters.

Hontiveros, during her latest visit to Cebu, made the statement in response to questions about whether she intends to seek the country’s highest post, expressing gratitude to those encouraging her to pursue it.

“Maraming salamat sa mga nag-express ng ganoong confidence sa akin. I am seriously considering it and preparing for that possibility,” she said, adding that it is important for their ranks to present “the strongest, best, most attractive, and hopeful offer” to the electorate.

The senator said she expects opposition groups to unite behind a single standard-bearer by the end of the year or, at the latest, by the first quarter of next year.

“And I’m looking forward to that moment na end of this year or at the very, very latest sana first quarter next year, magkaisa kami… There can be only one para may fighting chance. Then, laban na,” she added.

Hontiveros said survey performance and the breadth of public support will be key factors in determining who will carry the opposition banner.

“Syempre, iyong mga indicators, for example, iyong survey results of that strength, of that wide support mula sa ating mga kababayan at botante,” she said.

While she has yet to make a formal announcement, Hontiveros said she is preparing for this possibility but also emphasized the importance of unity within the opposition ranks.

Hontiveros’ visit to Cebu included engagements beyond the press conference, including meetings with students, graduates, and sectoral groups.

She spoke at a student forum at Southwestern University PHINMA, where discussions focused on youth concerns and student leadership.

She also attended a multisectoral forum in Cebu City later in the day, involving representatives from various basic sectors.

The senator also served as the commencement speaker at the graduation ceremonies of Cebu Technological University’s Tuburan Campus and Tabuelan Extension Campus on Thursday. — (FREEMAN)
