Eala starts US Open prep, reunites with Venus

MANILA, Philippines — What better way for Alex Eala to begin her build-up for the North American hard-court swing than with a reunion with legend Venus Williams?
The 21-year-old Filipina rising star shared a court with the 46-year-old American great in a joint training session yesterday ahead of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, set from tomorrow to Aug. 2 in Washington. The 500-level tournament is the first of several hardcourt events leading up to the US Open next month.
“Inspiring multiple generations,” Mubadala organizers wrote in an Instagram post as Eala and Williams prepared for their second doubles partnership.
The DC Open marks Eala’s start to the hardcourt transition. She is also entered in the National Bank Open from Aug. 1 to 13 in Toronto, Canada, and the Cincinnati Open from Aug. 8 to 23, before the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 13 in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Eala and Williams will also compete in singles, with the official draws for both divisions expected to be released today.
