CEBU, Philippines — A 25-year-old man was killed after being shot by an unidentified assailant in Sitio Laray 3, Barangay Buanoy, Balamban town, late Monday night, June 15.

The victim, identified only by the alias “Helbert”, a resident of Sitio Bangbang, Barangay Nangka, Balamban, was rushed to the Cebu Provincial Hospital-Balamban but was declared dead on arrival.

According to the Balamban Municipal Police Station, the shooting happened at around 11:45 P.M. It was a concerned citizen who reported the incident to authorities.

Initial police investigation showed that before the incident the victim and his live-in partner, identified only as Regine, had left their residence and were on their way to the wake of her grandmother in Sitio Sacsac, Barangay Abucayan.

Regine told investigators that they borrowed a motorcycle from an acquaintance to attend the wake. However, while traveling, the victim reportedly told her that he needed to make a delivery in Barangay Buanoy first.

Upon reaching Sitio Laray 3 in Barangay Buanoy, the couple got off the motorcycle. Regine stayed by the roadside while the victim walked ahead.

A few moments later, Regine allegedly saw a man wearing a jacket and long pants approach the victim and shoot him.

The shooter immediately fled the scene while Regine sought help from nearby residents.

Police have identified two persons of interest in connection with the case. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the killing and identify the shooter.

Meanwhile, a 39-year-old man was arrested with an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during the implementation of a search warrant by the Argao Municipal Police Station in Barangay Tiguib, Argao town, yesterday morning, June 16.

Police recovered a caliber .357 cal. revolver without visible markings or serial number, along with four live .357 cal. rounds from the suspect.

Following the operation, the suspect and the seized items were brought to the Argao Municipal Police Station for documentation, inventory, and the filing of appropriate charges, specifically violation of Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

Authorities also urged the public to report information that may help prevent criminal activities and maintain peace and order in their communities. — (FREEMAN)
