MANILA, Philippines — Apart from hunting wanted people, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group director Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre has another mission – to cleanse the CIDG of misfits.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil yesterday ordered Torre to spearhead a full-scale internal cleanup of the CIDG to restore its integrity and rebuild public confidence.

Marbil directed Torre to institute what he said are sweeping reforms in the CIDG, including stricter personnel screening, enhanced training and rigorous oversight to ensure compliance with the highest ethical standards.

“There’s no room for complacency or misconduct within the CIDG. We must identify and address any wrongdoing, ensuring that the CIDG maintains its critical role in our law enforcement operations,” Marbil said in a statement.

Marbil expects swift and decisive action from Torre, who is on track for promotion to major general, to address the challenges within the CIDG.

“His proven track record shows his capability to confront these issues head-on, and I am confident he will take on this mission with unyielding commitment,” he said.

Stressing the CIDG’s role in maintaining the credibility of police investigations, Marbil directed Torre to eliminate any internal issues or personnel who compromise the group’s integrity.

“The public deserves transparency, and we are committed to showing that the PNP stands firmly for the rule of law,” Marbil said.

Torre on Thursday assumed command of the CIDG, the PNP’s primary investigation arm, from Maj. Gen. Leo Francisco, who was transferred to the personnel holding and accounting unit of the Directorate for Personnel and Records Management.

Torre’s promotion as CIDG director is viewed as a reward after he personally led the manhunt operations resulting in the arrest of Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) leader Apollo Quiboloy, who is facing charges of qualified human trafficking and sexual abuse.
