Slavery to the clock

Usa sa nakabentaha kanato’ng mga senior citizens kun itandi sa mga nagtrabaho pa, mao nga dili na kita ulipon sa relo. Dili na ta magbantay sa orasan. Wala na kanato ang 8:00 to 12:00 ug 1:00 to 5:00 nga pagtrabaho.

Sa ato pa, gawas kun duna kita’y mga appointment, kita na ang magbuot unsa kita’ng orasa momata, unsa’ng orasa mogula sa balay, unsa nga oras mag-coffee break, unsa’ng orasa mouli. Sa laktod, kita na ang agalon sa relo.

Matud ni retired Senior Associate Justice Flerida Ruth Romero, na-relieve siya gikan sa daghang gimbuhaton ug obligasyon sulod sa dugay-dugay’ng katuigan nga nag-alagad sa gobiyerno.

Si Romero nagkanayon: “It was a feeling of eager anticipating that I looked forward to my retirement from the Supreme Court in 1999 (15 years ago).

Imagine, being liberated from the 8:00 am to 12:00 pm; 1:00 to 5:00 pm to open-ended schedule in the government service?

“I promised myself that I was not about to tie myself again to what a friend described as ‘virtual slavery to the clock. What a relief to finally settle down at home with the family and work on blueprints one could never find time for in one’s actively employed years.”

Tinuod, mao kini ang nahitabo kasagaran nato’ng mga senior citizens. In fact, daghan kanato ang mi-fully retire, nagtungkaro na lang sa panimalay, wala nay paki sa mga panghitabo sa palibot...As if, wala nay labot sa kalibutan.

Di ‘sab ni maayo. Mosamot ta’g katiguwang niana. Trabaho gihapon, although dili na regular nga government employee. Si Justice Romero usa unta sa mi-compose sa wala-mahinayon nga Truth Commission.

Gitudlo siya nga usa sa seven-man Administrative Tribunal sa International Labor Organization (ILO) sa Geneva nga gilangkoban sa mga judges gikan sa ubang kanasuran.

Nasakop usab siya sa maong tribunal sa Asian Development Bank nga nagbase sa Manila.

Sa ato pa, retired na, dugay nang na-senior citizen, apan wala mosugot nga mo-retire siya for good, tungod kay dili siya buot nga mo-retire usab ang iyang utok.

Tambag ni Romero: “At this age, let’s not dwell in the past (mao ra ba ni usahay ang atong buhaton). No regrets, no guilt  feelings, no wishful thoughts on what might have beens.

Nor should one worry and fret endlessly over the uncertain future. Live in the Eternal Now.” Nindot nga food for thought (kalan-on sa utok) alang sa mga senior citizens.
