“Pilandok” set to enhance habagat
CEBU, Philippines — The low pressure area east of the country developed into Tropical Depression Pilandok on midday Sunday, August 30.
State weather bureau PAGASA said that Pilandok is expected to even enhance the persistent rains from the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat.00:00
As of 11 a.m. yesterday the tropical cyclone was estimated to be at 1,225 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.
It was moving west-northwestward at 15 kph, with winds extending up to 420 kilometers from its center.
As of press time, no Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal was in effect.
PAGASA said Pilandok is unlikely to make landfall and is forecast to remain far from the Philippine landmass. The tropical depression is expected to move west-northwestward through Monday before turning northwestward to north-northwestward.
Pilandok is also forecast to be short-lived, remaining a tropical depression before weakening into a remnant low over the Philippine Sea south of Japan by Tuesday, September 1.
While Pilandok poses no direct landfall threat, it is actively enhancing habagat, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and severe winds to large parts of the country. (CEBU NEWS)
