EDITORIAL - Waiting for divine guidance

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia is undecided whether to run for senator in the 2013 elections. She said she is waiting for “guidance from above” on what path she would take after she relinquishes her post a year and a half from now.

The province’s first lady governor landed in the national spotlight when a Pulse Asia ranked her 45th in a nationwide survey of senatoriables. Garcia’s good showing is surprising considering the fact she is not a national figure, and her exposure is only limited to Cebu and the Visayas.

“All these things I am really considering and I am keeping my options open because after all, the directions that we take must be guided from the Lord Almighty. I am praying for guidance,” said the governor, who added that she has to think of her chances of winning and the logistics to wage a national campaign.

Well, there’s really nothing new if Garcia decides to throw her hat into national politics in the next elections. Remember, she was once considered running mate by some presidential candidates in the 2010 elections. But she opted to run for reelection to finish her third and final term.

Now that the law has barred her from seeking reelection, Garcia has no other recourse than to explore other fields in politics. She can run for congresswoman or for mayor. She can also slide one position down if she wants to preside over the Cebu Provincial Board.

Opportunities are boundless for her if she wants to continue her flourishing political career. In local politics, she remains a household name who can easily win for any position. Remember that she still undefeated.

In the national scene, however, it’s a different story. Garcia may have the charisma to win a national position. But as one sees it, it’s the resources that count for a national candidate to win. That is why she is waiting for ‘divine guidance.’

There’s no question about her capability handling senatorial duties. She has a proven track record as far as running the country’s most progressive province is concerned.

So a 45th place in the survey is very tempting. But it is still way below the 12th and last slot. And for Garcia to improve her ranking, she must bring her political image into the national consciousness.
