Debate over Angelo Reyes' suicide

IS SUICIDE HONORABLE. The whole country is now abuzz about the apparent suicide of former Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes. Most people woke up to the news of the violent end of a man who was embroiled in the scandal rocking the AFP. (He was accused of pocketing millions of pesos while still AFP chief and recently his wife was accused of spending thousands of dollars in foreign trips.) Now The Ear is hearing debates on whether or not committing suicide is the honorable thing to do when faced with scandal.

HARAKIRI? At an uptown cafe The Ear heard this conversation among a group of businessman. One said, “In Japan, it’s honorable to commit suicide. Katong gihimo ni Reyes mora’g pareha sa usa ka samurai who commit harakiri. The samurai would rather die with honor than surrender into the hands of the enemies.” His friend replied, “So, kinsa man ang mga enemies ni Reyes, ang mga Senators nga nagtulisok niya og sa iyang asawa?” Another said, “Yes, kay giprito man siya sa iyang kaugalingong mantika.”
