LOOKED DOWN ON. An Ear source heard this story about a group tour in Hong Kong that included mostly Caucasians, some Spaniards and two Filipinos. The haughty Caucasians reportedly looked down at the Filipino pair as if to ask what they were doing in the tour. When the group boarded a bus as the tour got underway, it became apparent that the two Spaniards did not speak English. One of the two Filipinos, a female teacher, then offered to translate what the tour guide said to the Spaniards. This surprised and impressed the tour guide and the Caucasians, none of whom could speak a single word of Español.
LOOKED UP TO. After the tour was done the Caucasians approached the Filipino and congratulated her for a job well-done, some even confessing they did not think much of Filipinos at first. The Filipino teacher came home and said that she had at least raised the image of the Filipino in the eyes of some foreigners. She has been a Spanish teacher in a local university for at least 20 years.
