Protecting Our Earth

Many parts of the world have been experiencing winter with sunny days, no snow. Instead of skiing, many have gone swimming or roller-skating as well. Spring flowers have also prematurely been blooming within wintertime which everyone has been describing as extremely warm or unusually warm. Elsewhere, storms, floods and droughts more deadly than previously experienced have been recorded. Even in our country, Baguio's vegetables were destroyed by frost and rice may follow if drought comes as predicted this year. Farms elsewhere in the world have also been affected, with crops affected by either lack of water or highly variable weather. Even the seas will yield less fish. All these changes are responses to high temperatures caused by excessive greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide, methane, chlorofluorocarbons and ozone. These gases, in turn, have been produced by humans who cannot seem to do without their fume-creating vehicles and factories, chemical/pesticide dependent agriculture, overuse of fossil fuels, and massive deforestation.

The alarm bells about global warming have been sounded, even long before the above strange, unexpected, variable weather and destructive results have taken place. Still, people throughout the world ignore the warnings and continue to do so, at their own, costly expense.

Now, the alarms are screaming for a stop to excessive, destructive human activities that are harming Mother Nature, that are destroying our earth, that are endangering us all.

At the accelerated rate that global warming is taking place, it will not be long before another round of famine, destruction of properties and lives through flooding, severe storms, and freak weather disturbances will be sadly experienced somewhere or in various places of this world. Humans better heed the alarms and change their lifestyle or be doomed by their own foolish, irresponsible ways and activities.

Suggestions for individuals, for localities, for regions and the whole world have been disseminated by very prominent personalities as well as by ordinary persons and groups. Governments and communities have been enjoined to undertake environmental conservation measures related to wiser energy use, forest protection and proper resource management and allocation.

What can we individually do to avert further global warming?

Go-on-a-low carbon-diet has been advocated by Klima , one that has been often been written up about. For example, car-pooling can be one simple step to take with neighbors and work colleagues. Less use of air conditioners will help as well as regulating or minimizing the use of electricity, even cellphone chargers. Proper segregation and management of waste resources can be done very easily by all. Saving and using rainwater for watering plants or for flushing toilets can extend the supply of precious drinking water for all. One may wish to give up or lessen excessive fuel and resource-consuming recreation and games.

All of us will have to do our share to protect our earth and ourselves. Perhaps you can check out for yourself today what you can do regularly to cool global temperature where you are, however you can.

We are left with no choice and not much time either. We either help to protect our earth NOW or perish with this rapidly globally warming world.
