MANILA, Philippines – Apparently, even laughs are not for free.
A Spanish comedy club in Barcelona is charging their audience through facial-recognition technology attached to the back of each seat tracking how much a spectator enjoyed the show.
According to a BBC report, a spectator is charged 0.30 euros (P16 in the Philippines) for each laugh, with a cap of 24 euros. The experiment was a response to the surge in government tax on tickets, resulting in a significant decrease in the number of people going to theaters.
The experiment so far has increased overall ticket costs by 6 euros.
