PNP probes drug shipments seized in Thailand, Laos

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is intensifying intelligence operations to track drug rings after authorities in Laos and Thailand intercepted shabu shipments allegedly bound for Manila.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police are coordinating with foreign law enforcement agencies to prevent the Philippines from becoming a drug transshipment hub.
Probers are investigating the seizure of 521 kilos of suspected shabu valued at P3.54 billion from a private jet at the Luang Prabang International Airport in Laos, including the aircraft’s ownership and flight records.
The PNP is also looking into reports that over a ton of shabu headed to the Philippines was intercepted in Thailand.
Vice President Sara Duterte yesterday expressed her gratitude to the governments of Laos and Thailand for intercepting the illegal drugs.
“Their actions helped save many Filipino families from the devastating effects of illegal drugs and have contributed to safer communities across the Philippines,” Duterte said.
She said the country is facing challenges in addressing the illegal drug trade.
